What data do you need?
Identify the start and end of the process, key process steps, required inputs, suppliers, outputs and the people or organizations receiving those outputs. Keep the map at a level that the project team can agree on.
Worked example
For order fulfilment: suppliers are the customer and warehouse; inputs are order details and stocked items; process steps are receive, pick, pack and dispatch; outputs are shipped orders and tracking information; customers are the buyer and customer support team.
How to use this Six Sigma tool
- Agree on the process start, finish and major steps.
- Map outputs and customers, then inputs and suppliers.
- Open the SIPOC tool and use the map to refine the project charter.
How to interpret the results
Use SIPOC to clarify scope and handoffs. It does not identify root causes or prove that a process is capable. Translate customer needs into measurable requirements, then plan the baseline measurement.
What is the difference between SIPOC and a flowchart?
SIPOC summarizes process boundaries, suppliers, inputs, outputs and customers. A flowchart describes the sequence of activities and decisions in more detail. Start with SIPOC when the team needs to agree on scope.
